Summary

The ongoing war in Ukraine has caused severe facial and cranial injuries on an unprecedented scale, leaving people struggling with essential functions, long-term rehabilitation and profound changes to their identity and quality of life. Doctors for Heroes helps people with severe facial injuries access individualized reconstructive implants and comprehensive case management, helping them restore essential functions, rebuild their appearance and return to everyday life.

Challenge

The ongoing war in Ukraine has caused a large number of severe injuries to people's faces and heads. These injuries can make it hard to see, breathe, eat or speak. They can also change how a person looks and how they see themselves. Recovery can take years and often requires several surgeries, rehabilitation and psychological support. Many people cannot afford the custom-made implants they need to rebuild their faces.

Solution

This project will help 5-7 people with severe facial and cranial injuries receive the individualized implants they need for reconstruction. Doctors for Heroes will coordinate their care, working with doctors, hospitals and manufacturers from medical assessment and 3D modeling to implant production and follow-up. The project will help patients take an important step toward rebuilding their faces, restoring essential functions and returning to everyday life.

Long-Term Impact

For these 5-7 people, receiving an implant will allow them to continue their journey of facial reconstruction and rehabilitation. It can help them feel more comfortable with their appearance, regain confidence and adapt to life after severe facial trauma. Over time, reconstruction can help them return to work, family and social life and move forward with their lives.
