Rebuild Life in Flooded South Brasil Final Report

By Vanessa Purper | Programs Manager

The project Rebuild Life in Flooded South Brasil was conceived based on structural support needed for local and traditional communities in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), in their socio-environmental and economic activities after the severe flooding of May 2024. The flood also inaugurates the Casa Fund's Extreme Climate Events Program , created to address the specificities of support channeled for impacts caused by climate change in Brazil.

The funds raised here were combined with other grants and became part of a Rebuild RS Call for Projects, that supported 69 initiatives, present in 29 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul.

The diversity of themes and actions presented by the projects supported by the Rebuild RS Call for Projects includes everything from reconstruction/renovation of the organizations’ physical spaces, restoration of riparian forests and recovery of springs, planting and nurseries of native plants from the state’s biomes, among many others.

There is collaboration between civil society organizations and schools, universities and other foundations. We also noticed, especially during the follow-up conversations, that several groups are having success and receiving contributions from various sources, to enhance the activities of the projects. Our perception indicates that the support from this Call is being extremely relevant for the organizations to resume their activities after the flood.

So far, 47 out of 69 projects finalized their projects: more than 20,000 native plant seedlings were planted, 16247 direct beneficiaries, around 3250 families.

With this work, Casa Fund reaffirms its commitment to socio-environmental justice by providing emergency support that combines climate, territory, and community engagement. It recognizes that reconstruction is an ongoing process that requires time, listening, and constant support. Caring for the land also means caring for people, and rebuilding means continuing to move forward together.
