Designing for a more resilient world!
On November 7th Architecture for Humanity held its 4th annual Design like You Give a Danm live Forum in San Francisco at the headquarters. Two members from each office around the world were invited to attend and discuss designing for a more resilient world. This was the first time that members from three offices -- Haiti, Japan, and New York City -- were together. Christian Beaulieu and Sven Kalim represented the Haiti office in an open mic discussion respectively on “Capacity Building on the Island of Ile à Vache” and “Construction Issues and Lessons Learned in Haiti”. Thursday November 7th, the opening night reception was held at the Jewish Museum in San Francisco where the Vision Award was presented to Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr by the Curry Stone Design Prize. The main event was held at the Autodesk Galleries; the Rockefeller Foundation’s managing director Micheal Berkowitz gave the key note address on 100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge. This event was a great Forum for the architectural community, as more devastating natural disasters are changing the landscape of our world. The design decisions that inform our built environment must tackle issues of resiliency in a more proactive manner.
Ravine Upgrading in Villa Rosa
This project targets a damaged ravine known as “le trou rosemond” in the slum of Villa Rosa, Port-au-Prince. Originally this ravine served as a waste dumping site for the residents of various bordering neighborhoods such as Cite Mericain and Balanyen. Residents of Villa Rosa identified this ravine as a priority project for the health hazard and sanitation problems it presented for the residents. Architecture for Humanity engaged the community through a participative process to help them formalize their needs. UNOPS as an implementing partner, was able to complete the project through the 16/6 program. Residents can now enjoy a safe passage way for relaxation, play and community gatherings.
Organizations all over the world struggle with the question of "transition". After an intervention, what does the future hold for the communities that were on the receiving end? What does sustainability really look like, and when can an organization say: time's up? Rebuild Globally, a social enterprise established in Haiti since 2010, will help us think about those questions and come up with answers to frame our perspective on the matter. Planning Studio Director Nancy Doran will participate on a panel at the Kellogg Foundation Grantees Conference to be held at Indigo.
December 3rd, 2013 is the 100th year anniversary of the founding of Ecole Elie Dubois. The Congregation is holding a religious ceremony at the St Louis de Gonzague Chapel in downtown Port-au-Prince at 8:30 am to commemorate the event. All are welcomed.
Architecture for Humanity presents its sincere condolences to the friends and family of Engineer-Architect Hervé Dejean. We are deeply saddened by the news of his tragic and premature passing. This is an immeasurable lost to Haiti's Architecture Community.
