Greetings Friends of DARE Network from the Thailand/Burma Border.

DARE Network has been providing Addiction Prevention and Non-medical, culturally appropriate treatment to the refugees from Burma for the last 12 years.

A big thank-you for all your support to DARE Network’s programs for the Burmese Refugees. Because of your help, we have been able to rebuild most our treatment centres and to provide Prevention Education activities for the thousands of young refugees in 5 Burmese Refugee Camps on the Thai/Burma Border.

After the flooding and extreme in the camps last year, DARE was able to rebuild most of our recovery centres. However, like many disaster relief responses, after the emergency is over it is thought that all the needs have been met. Mae La Camp is home to 80,000 Burmese refugees who have lost everything. Addiction is a natural response to the pain of these losses. See our microprojects that will finish rebuilding our DARE Centre in Mae La Refugee camp. As well, we are always concerned about the safety of our core staff as they travel the rough mountain roads of the Thai/Burma Border. Please see our Microproject about how we can keep our hard-working staff alive as they visit our DARE Teams in the camps.

We are in strategic preparations to follow the refugees into Karen State when peace is secure and they finally can return home. We will keep you up to date on these plans as they unfold and unfold they will.

This season we are approaching all of you who have donated in the past two years to consider becoming a recurring donor to our projects on GlobalGiving.

Here is what is happening this December with GlobalGiving and DARE Network

The Recurring Donation Campaign begins December 1, 2012 at 12:01 am ET and ends December 31, 2012 at11:59 pm ET.

Recurring donations must be initiated between December 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012 in order to be eligible for matching and prizes

Recurring donations created on GlobalGiving.org will be matched 1-to-1 up to $100 per donor per project. Eligible recurring donations of $101 or more will be matched at $100.

GlobalGiving is offering $25,000 in matching funds. Matching will last until funds run out.

The top 5 projects that recruit the most recurring donors by 11:59 ET December 31, 2012 will win $500 bonus award each. Projects must have at least 10 new recurring donors to qualify for a bonus award.

A Floor, A Roof, A Truck Bumper

Muddy Roads bang up our Truck

Eastern North America has just gone through one of the worst storms in its history. All eyes will be on recovery from this storm. Even with adequate warning and technological backup, emergency services, electricity and heat, many people died and were injured. Property damage is in the millions.

It feels hopeless to ask you all to look once again at our efforts to recover from last year’s tropical storms and flooding in the Burmese refugee camps, but perhaps now you may have a feeling of the power of such a storm.

Here we have no brick walls, no services. As we continue to recover from the floods and extreme weather, a year later we have done much with many thanks to all of you.

We invite you to have a look at our new GlobalGiving Micro Projects for Rebuild Burma Refugee Recovery Centres. Just go to the project site on GlobalGiving. Even if we can fund these 3 small micro projects, we will be doing very well. We need 1 Roof, 1 Floor and Bumpers for our truck.

To look to the future, during the month of December, GlobalGiving will be offering 100% match on all initial recurring donations up to $100 per donor. They have $25,000 in matching funds available and matching will last until December 31st or until funds run out. The top 5 projects that recruit the most recurring donors by 11:59 ET December 31, 2012 will win $500 bonus award each. To qualify for the match and for bonus awards, donors must give for 3 consecutive months following the initial donation (for a total of 4 months).

10 Months Since the Flooding...What Have We Done?

Dear Friends

Hard to believe it has only been 10 months since the flooding in Thailand devastated the Burmese Refugee Camps on the Thai/Burma Border. Since that time, thanks to all of you we have raised $12,900 dollars of the $20,000 we projected we would need to recover our DARE Centres in 5 camps.

Three of the DARE Centers have been completely rebuilt by the refugee DARE workers. These also, have been re-supplied with items needed for treating the refugees who come to DARE Network to recover from their addictions and for activities for the young people in the camps to prevent future addiction.

The other two DARE Centers are nearly completed. We are attaching some photos for you to see the progress of the work in Nu Poe and Umpiem Mai camps. Umpiem camp was also hit by a big fire this year. DARE lost the roof of the building. Fortunately no one was hurt from DARE and we were going to take the roof off anyway, as it was already damaged by the bad weather.

We are still in need of funding for the interior of the buildings in Nu Poe and Umpiem, which includes sleeping mats, mosquito nets, white boards for training, kitchen supplies, stoves and pots for cooking for the clients and paper materials for treatment and training, sports equipment for the young people, art supplies and musical instruments. We also need a few additional items to finish off the buildings themselves.

The situation in the camps have become more difficult as Burma opens up. Life may be better in the cities in Burma and the big donors are lining up to get in there, but they are neglecting the camps as a results. Rations have been cut causing more hunger, poverty creating further social problems including addiction. We at DARE are needed now more than ever. Until people can return home safely, they are stuck in the camps depressed and desperate.

Fortunately, our workers are doing their best to alleviate the suffering and learning how to support each other.
