Two months after the passage of Hurricane Odile, we continue to make progress. The city of La Paz is already almost back to normal. This is thanks to the hard work of local authorities, our citizens and friends from abroad, who have each made a contribution – or, as we say here, a "granito de arena” – to clean up the city.
But communities outside of the city are still catching up. In the Las Pacas fishing community, we are still working hard to clean up and sort out what can be salvaged and what still works – and responsibly disposing of the remainder. We believe that nature is very wise, and she gives opportunities for renewal and chances to start over with new ideas and plans for a better future.
Today, thanks to the generous donations to Olazul’s rebuilding campaign, we will be able to reconstruct our houses. And we will make them better this time, by designing them to use natural light so we can save the energy generated by our solar system for use at night. We are also very excited to install a composting toilet, a more ecological method for sanitation, especially in sensitive areas. Our progress at Las Pacas can serve as a model for other communities affected by Hurricane Odile. We hope that, like us, they will also be able to find opportunities for renewal.
