During a recent visit to Haya village, families were happy to show us the fish growing in their pond. The fish are still small and will need about a year to reach a suitable size for harvest. Families are using rice husk to support fish rearing and are managing the pond carefully. Once the fish are ready, proceeds from the harvest are intended to support poorer households and important village needs.
Families are also caring for chickens and goats. Some have already earned income by selling chickens. Goat farming is progressing too: some goats have given birth, while others have not yet had kids. Families in the other participating villages are also managing their fish ponds well.
These activities are still developing, but they are helping families build local sources of food and income that can benefit the wider community.
