In August 2025, the Deaf Welfare Awareness Foundation (DWAF) extended its humanitarian relief efforts to the flood-affected communities of Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The devastating floods swept away homes, livelihoods, and belongings, leaving families in extreme distress. Many families not only lost their valuables but also suffered the unbearable grief of losing loved ones. Among the most vulnerable were Deaf individuals and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), who often face barriers in accessing mainstream aid distribution and communication during emergencies.
Understanding these challenges, DWAF mobilized its team of staff and volunteers to reach the affected areas with immediate relief. Our primary focus was on providing cooked food, ration packs, milk, biscuits, drinking water, and other essential edibles to families struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs. The distribution drive was carefully organized to ensure that Deaf and PWD families were included and treated with dignity.
The relief items were distributed among families who had lost their homes and were living in temporary shelters, often with no source of income or resources. We witnessed countless stories of resilience—mothers struggling to feed their children, elderly individuals trying to survive without basic necessities, and young Deaf individuals who felt isolated in the chaos of disaster response. By delivering food support directly into their hands, DWAF was able to provide not just sustenance, but also reassurance that they are not forgotten.
The impact of this project goes far beyond the food itself. Families expressed gratitude for receiving timely support at a moment when hope seemed lost. Many Deaf beneficiaries shared that DWAF’s presence gave them confidence that their voices would be heard in a crisis where communication barriers often leave them excluded. For the children, receiving milk and biscuits brought smiles amid the devastation—a small reminder of care and compassion in difficult times.
This initiative also strengthened DWAF’s partnerships at the community level, showing that inclusive disaster response is possible and necessary. Our efforts were made possible thanks to the generous contributions and encouragement from supporters like you. Each donation helped us arrange food packs, logistics, and transportation to ensure aid reached the most deserving families.
As we continue our mission, DWAF is committed to expanding its relief and rehabilitation work for Deaf and PWD communities across Pakistan. While emergency food distribution was an urgent need, the road to recovery for these families is long. In the coming months, we plan to assess further needs, including medical support, shelter assistance, and livelihood rehabilitation programs.
We sincerely thank all our donors and well-wishers for standing with us. Your trust and generosity empower us to reach those who are often left behind during humanitarian crises. Together, we can ensure that no family—especially the Deaf and Persons with Disabilities—faces disaster alone.
With gratitude,
Farhat Aslam
