Throughout 2026, the Kevin Richardson Foundation's Cubs to Conservation programme reached more than 120 learners across six schools, bringing conservation education to life through interactive workshops, peer-to-peer learning and exciting opportunities to explore the conservation sector.
The programme began with 80 Grade 6 learners from four primary schools, who participated in two-day conservation workshops. Learners explored important conservation topics, took part in interactive activities and enjoyed a game drive, giving them the opportunity to experience wildlife beyond the classroom.
The journey continued with more than 40 Grade 11 learners from two high schools, who took part in conservation clubs designed to encourage critical thinking, community involvement and problem-solving. One particularly special moment was welcoming back Bongani Mutileni, a former learner and Kevin Richardson Foundation bursary recipient, who returned to his old school to share his journey and inspire the next generation.
An exciting part of the programme saw selected high school learners step into the role of teachers, sharing their newly acquired knowledge with primary school learners. Through four teaching sessions, they had the opportunity to build their confidence, develop leadership skills and inspire younger children to take an interest in conservation.
The programme culminated in an Immersive Experience Weekend at Mongena Game Lodge, where 19 participants were introduced to a variety of conservation career opportunities. With generous support from Mongena, learners received exposure to different roles within the sector, helping them gain a better understanding of the opportunities available to those wishing to pursue a future in conservation.
Although no candidate was selected for the potential bursary opportunity this year, the pilot programme provided valuable insight into how we can strengthen the learner selection process and career development opportunities going forward.
Every conservation journey starts somewhere. Through Cubs to Conservation, we hope to nurture curiosity, build confidence and give young people the knowledge and opportunities to become active participants in protecting our natural heritage.
Thank you for helping us make these experiences possible and for investing in the next generation of conservationists.
