Generous support received from GlobalGiving has enabled Friends of the Rouge to award one additional rain garden to a Detroit resident participating in the Rain Gardens to the Rescue program. Nine (9) total rain gardens will be installed in August 2021 at the homes of Detroiters who have completed a five-part training course where they learned all about rain gardens, their installation and maintenance.
John is the 9th garden recipient and him and his family look forward to having a beautiful native garden that will be a great space to teach his son and their community about rain gardens and nature right in their front yard. Their home’s basement had recently flooded from heavy rain, so John is eager to install his garden that will manage stormwater on his property.
The rain gardens, designed by participants during the course, and with support from stormwater experts, will capture and store rainwater runoff from the roofs of their homes – preventing the water from flowing into combined sewer systems, which is a major source of water pollution in the Rouge and Detroit Rivers and the Great Lakes. Rain gardens are a low cost solution to urban stormwater pollution. These gardens are going to help store thousands of gallons of water each time it rains and help towards the goal of 5,000 rain gardens by 2035!
