The community of Mallikpur is a semi-rural one, connected to the city of Kolkata through the railways – one of the major corridors of child trafficking. Mallikpur has a large number of migrant populations, living in rented households and traveling to city regularly for work as usually they are daily wage earners. The connectivity to the city by rail is most convenient due to cheap train fares and frequent carriages. For all those families, the outbreak of COVID-19 meant no food or other essentials as they could not go to work or buy food during the strict phases of lockdowns. The only connectivity to the city of Kolkata is the Railway station, which had been closed for months; making thousands of families lose their livelihoods and thereby struggling for survival without secured provisions of food, medicines and other provisions. As a result of the struggle to survive, children in Mallikpur, who were already at extreme risk of being trafficked or abused due to neglect and lack of care from most of their families, are further exposed to immense challenges.
The project supported by Vital for Children is helping CINI in making innovative efforts through creation of a child-friendly environment in and around Mallikpur railway platform and community - one of the most vulnerable transport terminals of South Bengal. The project is making significant efforts in order to build resilience in the communities for safeguarding children from vulnerabilities resulting from the pandemic
