Quality of Life for Special Needs Youth in Jamaica

The impact of the ECHO Autism Jamaica initiative continues to extend beyond Jamaica's borders. This summer, a pediatrician completing a fellowship in Developmental Pediatrics in Grenada chose to model her fellowship research project after the ECHO Autism Jamaica teacher education initiative. Inspired by the program's collaborative learning approach, she developed a two-day workshop to equip special education teachers in Grenada with evidence-based strategies for supporting students with autism. The workshop focused on autism spectrum disorder, behavior management, and sensory processing in the classroom, while measuring changes in teachers' knowledge and confidence through pre- and post-training evaluations.

As part of this collaboration, Smile A While Foundation Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Joanne Oates, was invited to serve as an occupational therapy expert and presenter, sharing clinical expertise and educational resources originally developed through the ECHO Autism Jamaica initiative. The curriculum incorporated practical, evidence-based strategies that teachers could immediately apply within their classrooms to better support students with autism. Seeing the ECHO Autism Jamaica model adapted to meet the needs of educators in another Caribbean nation was a meaningful milestone, demonstrating the model's potential to strengthen autism education and professional capacity across the region.

This milestone represents more than a single workshop it demonstrates the growing regional influence of the Smile A While Foundation's commitment to increasing access to autism education and professional development throughout the Caribbean. Thanks to the generosity of our GlobalGiving supporters, the knowledge, resources, and partnerships cultivated through ECHO Autism Jamaica are creating a ripple effect that extends well beyond one island. As more educators and healthcare professionals adopt and adapt this model, we move closer to our vision of ensuring that every child with autism in the Caribbean has access to informed, confident, and well-equipped professionals who can help them thrive.
