Project Summary
The Smile A While Foundation continues to advance the ECHO Autism Jamaica: Educators initiative, building upon the successful launch in January 2025. This program adapts the global Project ECHO® model to strengthen the capacity of Jamaican early childhood educators supporting autistic children, particularly in underserved and rural areas. Through virtual learning communities led by a multidisciplinary hub team, educators engage in collaborative knowledge sharing, case-based learning, and skill-building to foster inclusive classroom environments.
During this reporting period, project implementation and planning activities were briefly impacted by Hurricane Melissa, which affected infrastructure, internet connectivity, and stakeholder availability across several regions of Jamaica. While this natural disaster required temporary adjustments to timelines, the project remained active, adaptable, and aligned with its core goals.
Goals of the Project
• Increase educator knowledge, skills, and confidence in supporting autistic students
• Promote evidence-based, inclusive classroom practices
• Establish and sustain a national network of educators and allied professionals using the ECHO model
• Document program outcomes to inform future cohorts and strengthen funding opportunities
Activities Completed
1. Research and Reporting Planning (May–August 2025)
The project team conducted a comprehensive strategy meeting to plan two major outputs: a peer-reviewed research article and a detailed program report capturing both academic outcomes and implementation lessons. While follow-up planning for the next ECHO Autism session was underway, Hurricane Melissa necessitated a short pause in scheduling, allowing time for partner recovery and stabilization. Planning resumed once communication and infrastructure were restored.
2. Ongoing Cohort Support
Despite storm-related disruptions, educators continue to apply strategies learned during sessions, including communication supports, classroom accommodations, and family engagement techniques. Informal peer communication and network connections remained active throughout this period.
Challenges
• Storm-related disruptions to internet access and scheduling following Hurricane Melissa
• Limited connectivity in rural areas affecting consistent session participation
• Balancing voluntary participation with educators’ demanding workloads
• Need for enhanced data collection tools to strengthen evaluation quality
Next Steps
Complete thematic and statistical analysis of pilot data by January 2026
• Submit the end-of-cycle program report by February 2026
• Draft and submit the peer-reviewed article by March 2026
