Project Summary
The Smile A While Foundation officially launched the ECHO Autism Jamaica: Educators initiative in January 2025. This pioneering program adapts the global Project ECHO® model to support Jamaican early childhood educators in creating inclusive learning environments for autistic children. By connecting local educators to a “hub” of autism specialists via virtual learning communities, the initiative aims to increase the capacity of schools to serve students with autism—particularly in underserved communities.
Goals of the Project
To increase educator knowledge and confidence in supporting autistic students.
To promote inclusive classroom practices through evidence-based training.
To establish a sustainable, collaborative network of education and health professionals across Jamaica using the ECHO model.
Activities Completed
1. Hub Team Sensitization (September 2024):
An introductory session was held with core stakeholders and potential hub team members to present the ECHO model and its relevance to Jamaica’s education system. Partners included:
The Smile A While Foundation
Project ECHO®
ECHO Autism Communities
Mico University College Child Assessment and Research in Education Centre
2. Hub Team Training (January 22–23, 2025):
A two-day virtual training equipped the multidisciplinary hub team—including educators, psychologists, and therapists—with the tools and structure to lead sessions and support participating teachers effectively.
3. Launch of ECHO Autism Jamaica: Educators Series (January 2025 – Present):
The first three ECHO sessions have been successfully conducted. Topics covered included:
Introduction to autism in the Jamaican classroom
Creating structured, autism-friendly environments
Addressing behavior challenges through positive supports
Each session combined a brief expert-led didactic presentation with a real-world case discussion, allowing educators to learn, reflect, and share experiences in a collaborative virtual setting.
Early Impact
Increased Engagement: Educators have responded positively, citing the relevance of topics and the supportive nature of the community.
Knowledge Transfer: Participants are already reporting changes in their classroom strategies based on guidance shared during ECHO sessions.
Network Formation: A new professional learning community is forming, breaking the isolation educators often face when supporting students with autism.
Challenges
Some technical difficulties with internet access in rural areas.
Balancing voluntary participation with educators’ busy schedules.
Next Steps
Conducting the next round of ECHO sessions through June 2025.
Gathering feedback and data to inform improvements.
Exploring options to offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for participants.
Expanding outreach to more parishes across Jamaica.
Conclusion
The launch of ECHO Autism Jamaica: Educators marks a significant milestone in addressing autism support gaps in Jamaican schools. The Smile A While Foundation is proud to lead this initiative and looks forward to continued growth, collaboration, and impact in the months ahead.
