This year our program supports 20 girls and boys attending school from 4th to 12th grade. We also support another 7 youth who have completed high school and entered collage children and youth, 2 preparing for employment after training and one in special needs training. Many of the kids in the program like Roha were highly vulnerable and at risk due to losing one or both parents. These young girls and boys are usually cared for by their single mothers or grandparents who struggle to meet the family’s day to day needs.
Roha is one of the bright children who joined the Brave Hearts program recently. Only 10 years old and in 4th grade, Roha has been through a lot. He lost his father when he was only six years old and his mother supported him and his elder brother for four years doing various small jobs. Although she works hard, most of the little income she earns is spent on their house rent leaving little for the rest of their needs. Adding to their heartbreak, Roha’s brother also passed away from illness only four months before he joined our program.
It has been a difficult journey for little Roha and his mother. When they joined our program, Roha was in need of more nutrition and was still grieving from the loss of his father and brother, also finding it difficult to do well in school. Roha now receives basic support from Brave Hearts including allowance for regular meals, coverage for school fee, uniform, school materials. This allowed him to focus on school and helped ease the burden on his mother. In addition to this, Roha comes to our drop in center every day after school for studies. He and the other children have a healthy after school snacks to get refreshed and energized then attend their tutorial study session. A tutor supports Roha and the other kids in the subjects they face difficulty, the social workers also support and give guidance and counseling to the children.
Roha aspires to be a leader in the future and loves playing football. With tutorial support as well as guidance and counseling, Roha was able to move past the grief he faced, focus on his studies and improve his reading and mathematical skills after a few months in the program. Roha is now a happy boy always smiling and making friends with the other children in the program. We have no doubt that if we continue to provide Roha holistic care, he will have a very bright future ahead of him!
Thank you for supporting orphan and vulnerable children like Roha gain and retain access to quality education enabling them to thrive and transform their lives!
