Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda
Thanks to the generous support of GlobalGiving donors, the Integrated Child Support Foundation (ICSF) continues to provide psychosocial support to refugee children and families living in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Nakivale hosts thousands of refugees from countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Central African Reuplic, Burundi, Rwanda and Sudan. Many newly arrived children have experienced conflict, loss of family members, and displacement, which often leaves them struggling with fear, trauma, and emotional distress. Through this project, we create safe spaces where children can rebuild confidence, reconnect with their communities, and begin the process of healing.
Since the last update, the project expanded its community-based storytelling and psychosocial sessions led by trained grandparents and facilitators. These sessions combine storytelling, games, art activities, and group discussions to help children express their emotions and build resilience. In 2025 alone, 1,610 children participated in storytelling sessions, while 2,134 parents and caregivers attended positive parenting and mental health awareness sessions. Caregivers learned practical skills for supporting children affected by trauma and displacement, strengthening family relationships and creating safer home environments.
GlobalGiving donors also helped strengthen community capacity to support vulnerable children and their parents. Through this project, 72 grandparents, teachers, and community facilitators received training in child safeguarding, emotional literacy, and trauma-informed storytelling techniques. In addition, 183 vulnerable children were identified and referred for specialized support through existing protection and health services in the refugee settlement. These efforts are helping ensure that children who face neglect, separation, or illness receive the assistance they need timely.
One story that reflects the impact of this project is that of a "13-year-old boy from the Democratic Republic of Congo who arrived in Nakivale after losing his father during the conflict. When he first joined the storytelling sessions, he rarely spoke and kept to himself. Through the support of the group and the encouragement of facilitators, he slowly began to share his experiences. Today he participates actively in the sessions and often encourages other children who are struggling". His transformation reminds us that when children are given safe spaces to express themselves and supportive adults to guide them, healing becomes possible.
Your support through GlobalGiving is making it possible for refugee children to regain hope, rebuild confidence, and grow in safe community environments. We are deeply grateful to everyone who continues to stand with these children and their families.
