Challenge

Every second refugee is a woman. Displaced women are particularly exposed to gender-specific risks such as sexual violence, enforced prostitution and human trafficking. Refugee camps also do not provide appropriate protection or infrastructure for the specific needs of women. Thousands of displaced women and girls find themselves in this dangerous situation in Greece.

Solution

SAO supports displaced women through its psychosocial support programme. The programme consists of psychosocial consultation, access to specific social / protection / SGBV services, support with administrative tasks (official documents, bank account, social security, housing, asylum services etc.) and basic needs (food coupons, NFIs), information and awareness rising, accessing health and legal services, workshops on a variety of topics, arts and crafts workshops and Greek language lessons.

Long-Term Impact

Through the intensive accompaniment, displaced women's trust can be built to successfully support them in: a) continuing the healing process and strengthening their resilience b) securing a protected living environment c) strengthening their rights to international protection d) finding their way to specialised organisations that care for victims of torture, severe SGBV cases and human trafficking e) having a sustainable "empowering impact" in their new society through equal participation.
