Olive's Star

By Fanny Meng | Program Volunteer

At our first read-through of the play, I knew this would be a challenge for the children. When it came time to assign roles, hands flew up for the speaking parts—until I asked, "Who wants to be the sound controller?"

The room fell silent.

Then I saw a small hand rise from the corner. Her name was Olive—quiet and easy to overlook, but her eyes held a sparkle like tiny stars.

Olive was small, and I often lost sight of her during chaotic rehearsals. But somehow, whenever I needed her, she was already standing by my side. I told her, "The sound controller sets the rhythm of the whole play. You are remarkable." She smiled shyly. At the next rehearsal, she arrived even earlier, testing the speakers. When the Mario theme music played, Olive became the loudest sound in the room—and in those moments, everyone saw the stars in her eyes.

Later, Olive received two bonus lines of voice-over. She didn't have to memorize them, but she did anyway—practicing again and again. Rehearsal by rehearsal, her voice grew stronger, her movements more natural. The stars were no longer just in her eyes; they began to flow around her.

On performance day, the curtain rose. Olive stayed at the side of the stage. But this time, her stars leaped and danced, casting a warm glow that wrapped around every performer and filled the entire auditorium.

Looking back, Olive's stars shine bright. Within them, I see courage taking root, growth unfolding, and a love that everyone could feel.
