Just $10 provided Lanyero Jennifer, mother of 3 and caretaker of her 3 nephews, with a solar panel cooker and a WAPI.
A solar panel cooker is a foil-lined cardboard reflector with a dark pot inside a heat-resistant plastic bag. This simple mechanism converts sunlight into heat and can cook one or two pots of food at a time. It greatly reduces the amount of time Jennifer spends tending an open fire each day, improving her health and giving her more time to do her tailoring work and make paper bead jewelry.
A WAPI (Water Pasteurization Indicator) is a reusable thermometer with a plug of wax which melts at 68C. All disease-causing organisms are killed at just above 65C (or 149F), the pasteurization temperature. Since the water is not heated all the way to boiling, and merely reaches the pasteurization temperature, it saves Jennifer time and money on fuel. The convenience of the WAPI makes Jennifer and her family more likely to pasteurize their water and, thus, far less likely to contract water-borne illnesses.
$10 means improved health outcomes, increased hours of productivity at work or school, and a more hopeful future for Jennifer's family. Is there a better holiday gift than giving hope to a family in need?
