Boxgirls continues with Afterschool Education

By Oliver Bock | Project Assistant

First of all, we want to thank you so much for your generous donations! Due to your consistent support of Boxgirls International, you made the great accomplishments of this project possible!

Thanks to your support

...greater self-esteem/self-efficacy, such as better communication skills among the girls could be achieved

...social capital, such as greater awareness of local networks and how to access them could be reached

...several events such as Women's Days and awareness campaigns that included important community members in order to multiply content and widespread the message of female empowerment, could be conducted

...increased violence negotiation skills, such as awareness about dangers in the community, knowledge and skills how to handle those dangers could be achieved.

Because of Boxgirls International's versatile success, we started a Boxgirls follow-up project: The Girls' Afterschool Leadership Education which provides several additional benefits. In the last years, Boxgirls focused on strengthening girls and young women living is disadvantaged neighborhoods in South Africa's townships through the facilitation of leadership skills, sports and self-defense training.

The Afterschool Leadership Education builds on these values and further comprises the following activities:

  • leadership development training for girls and young women
  • developing girls' learning skills and academic performance
  • girls’ entrepreneurship clubs to meet women leaders and learn about career opportunities
  • community safety events where girls and community members learn techniques to prevent GBV

Boxgirls starts the new programme dedicated to primary school girls from the communities of Khayelitsha, Nyanga, and Gugulethu. Girls attend Boxgirls Club twice a week for 12 weeks for 90 minutes after school on site at the school to be led by a peer facilitator. Peer facilitators are young women with high integrity from the community, trained and supervised by us, who will facilitate the group of 30 girls through a 12 week biweekly curriculum of games, discussion groups and event preparation and execution. Together with our partner organisations we will also offer Saturday homework support.

The Girls' Afterschool Leadership Education curriculum will cover themes such as:

  • communication skills (active listening, presentation, debating, video making)
  • self-respect and goal setting
  • personal safety
  • community mapping
  • de-escalation strategies
  • solidarity with other girls, understanding girls’ rights
  • awareness of local resources and opportunities for them
