By Katie Doyle Myers | President, Philanthropiece AC
We are grateful for each and every one of our champions! By now you know about our dedication to financial inclusion and the importance of creating a culture of savings. Philanthropiece A.C. recognizes that a person, family, or community’s health, stability and resilience is based on having a solid economic platform from which to thrive. Your contributions are supporting in creating more community savings groups throughout Baja California Sur and México. We consider these groups as the infrastructure necessary to create positive, sustaining change within a community. As Executive Director Martha Marquez says, “The group itself is not the goal…the group is the platform from which to launch.” And launching they are. Philanthropiece AC is currently working with over 1000 people to plan for their futures. Thanks to your support, 100 of those are new members in 2022!
What we mean by “launching” is that, once groups have started to save together and have their basic needs met, they can then begin to use their collective strength to address other systemic issues. Philanthropiece AC is constantly working to understand barriers to access and justice, and to use the trust that we have built to deliver related education, training, and programming. On May 25th, for example, Martha Marquez and Monica Condes, Philanthropiece AC Trainer, made a presentation on “Economic Violence” in commemoration of “Orange Day,” which serves in México as a reminder that it is the responsibility of all of us to eradicate violence against girls and women. In June, Philanthropiece led the “Social Entrepreneurship Laboratory” that introduced university students to the concept of using a business model to solve a social problem; this training will now go out into the communities. And in this month of July, Philanthropiece AC is working to advance environmental stewardship: with our partner Desplastificate, we are campaigning for a month without plastic to open opportunities for community members to rethink our consuming habits; and with the municipality of Loreto, BCS, Philanthropiece has joined a council that is analyzing best practices for water protection and sustainability. As well, we are pleased to announce a partnership with the Food Security Alliance of BCS, which is working to create healthy food systems across the state.
Thank YOU for being part of sustaining our organization that is working every day to truly make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.
