In Tanzania, most families in rural communities cannot afford pads for their school-going girls on regular basis, causing girls to stay at home rather than attend school when menstruating. Also, many schools in rural areas in Tanzania have insufficient numbers of latrines, which are often poorly designed and maintained. For girls who are menstruating, these problems compound the difficulties posed by the inability to afford sanitary pads as well as cultural taboos around menstruation. As a result, many girls miss on average four days of school every month which is over a month in a year.
To help tackle some of the prevailing challenges, the organization opted to provide reusable sanitary pads that are more compelling to the girls because they are hygienically approved, affordable, high-quality, and reusable.
During the current reporting period, and despite the extreme economic situation we found ourselves in, the organization distributed 20 reusable sanitary pads to girls in one primary school in Arusha.
We are grateful to our partners and friends who donated their hard-earned cash towards this project through this platform. Together, we're keeping girls in school in rural Tanzania.
