Empowering Youths through Menstrual Health Education

By Fabiyi Faithful | Program Officer

My question services made significant strides in promoting the health and well-being of young people, particularly adolescent girls. Menstruation, a natural part of life, is often overshadowed by stigma and poor hygiene practices, largely due to the lack of adequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities

World Menstrual Hygiene Day presents a critical opportunity to engage young people in breaking the silence around menstrual health. This day is dedicated to challenging taboos, raising awareness, and changing negative social norms. It also aims to galvanize decision-makers to prioritize and take action on menstrual health and hygiene at all levels

Our digital platform, My Question Service, provides confidential, non-judgmental access to comprehensive sexuality education. By linking young people to a network of counselors and youth-friendly services, we leveraged World Menstrual Hygiene Day to make a significant impact

On this important day, we conducted activities in two government secondary schools to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene by providing essential information on good menstrual hygiene practices and sharing experiences and factual information, we aimed to demystify menstruation and reduce stigma

During our sessions, students asked insightful questions, highlighting their curiosity and the gaps in their knowledge:

What age should a girl start her period?

Is it normal not to have a period for four months?

Does brown-coloured menstrual blood indicate an infection?

My Question services remains committed to advancing the health and education of young people. By providing tech solutions that facilitate access to critical information and support, we are empowering the next generation to overcome menstrual stigma and embrace healthy practices. Our work continues to inspire change, driving us towards a future where every young person can navigate their health with confidence and dignity.
