Postcard: Project Site Visit

By Ellen Currin and Shari Davis | GlobalGiving InTheField Representatives

Children meeting us upon arrival
Children meeting us upon arrival

Shari Davis & Ellen Currin are InTheField Travelers with GlobalGiving who are visiting our partners’ projects throughout Nepal. Their “Postcard” from their most recent visit in Nepal:

The 12 children at the Child Welfare Home Khandbari were shy at first, but they soon opened up with smiles. Project leader Tenjenath led us on a tour of the new home that the children recently moved into, and we got to meet the house mother that cooks and cares for the children. The home lacks many resources, but Tenjenath explained that SESF is working to provide basic necessities for the children like rice and school books. The overall atmosphere at the orphanage was happy and full of love!

Tenjenath explained the need for a sustainable source of funding for supporting the orphanage. Short-term donations or sponsorships have been an unpredictable source of funding for SESF and the children require long term support. SESF has invested in goats, chickens, and a vegetable garden that will continue providing resources for the orphanage. The fund that Tenjenath desires will generate interest to provide a monthly income for food, education, and salaries at the home.

The orphanage was hosting a celebration on the evening of our visit, so we feasted together on sweet rice and vegetable curries. There was music and the children performed for us, and then we took turns teaching English and Nepali dance styles to each other!  Laughter echoed through the home well past nightfall, and when it was finally bedtime, we were sad to leave the new friends we had met.
