The Joys of After-School Tutoring: Changing Lives Through Education
For many children around the world, education is the key that unlocks opportunity, dignity, and hope. Yet for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, succeeding in school is rarely easy. Limited resources, overcrowded classrooms, family hardship, and a lack of academic support often stand in the way of progress. This is why after-school tutoring programs can make such a powerful difference.
Sixteen years ago, our association, Les Amis de Hampaté Bâ, launched the “Read and Write” program in Niamey. The initiative was created to support scholarship students attending Hampaté Bâ Middle School, many of whom were struggling academically despite their determination to learn. The goal was simple yet essential: to help underprivileged students strengthen their reading and writing skills so they could succeed in school and build brighter futures.
At first glance, the concept seemed straightforward. Offer students extra support after school, help them improve, and inspire them to do better. But reality proved more complex.
In the beginning, attendance was low. Many students who were already finding school difficult saw the idea of staying after classes for additional lessons as a burden. After spending long days in the classroom, they understandably wanted to go home rather than remain at school for more work. To them, tutoring felt like punishment rather than opportunity.
The program faced significant challenges in those early years. Convincing struggling students to stay after school required patience, persistence, and creativity. Tutors had to show students that these sessions were not another source of pressure, but rather a safe and encouraging place where they could learn at their own pace.
Gradually, everything changed.
With time, dedication, and the support of talented tutors, the atmosphere transformed. Students began to discover that reading and writing were not impossible tasks, but skills they could master. Lessons became interactive, enjoyable, and motivating. Instead of frustration, students experienced progress. Instead of fear, they gained confidence.
What once felt like a chore became something students looked forward to.
The Power of Small Groups
One of the greatest strengths of the “Read and Write” program has been its use of small-group tutoring. In many schools, teachers face large classes and cannot always provide each child with the individual attention they need. Small groups changed that dynamic completely.
Tutors were able to focus on each student’s specific difficulties. They could patiently explain lessons that had not been understood in class, review homework step by step, and encourage students who lacked confidence.
These groups also created something equally valuable: connection.
Students no longer felt alone in their struggles. They saw that others faced similar challenges, and together they supported one another. Friendships grew. Mutual encouragement replaced embarrassment. The tutoring room became more than a classroom, it became a community.
The atmosphere was relaxed, positive, and warm. Students felt comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. This sense of belonging motivated them to work harder and believe in themselves.
Progress That Builds Confidence
Little by little, attitudes changed dramatically.
Students who once avoided tutoring sessions began attending regularly and enthusiastically. They started understanding homework exercises that had once seemed impossible. Daily progress led to improved grades, and improved grades led to stronger self-esteem.
For many of these scholarship students, tutoring became the ladder that helped them climb toward academic success.
When children discover that effort leads to results, something remarkable happens: they begin to believe in their own potential. This confidence often extends far beyond school. It influences how they speak, how they dream, and how they imagine their future.
Mission accomplished.
Outstanding Success Stories
This year, two scholarship recipients at Hampaté Bâ Middle School ranked first in their classes, an extraordinary achievement considering the poverty and obstacles they have faced.
Their success demonstrates that talent exists everywhere. Opportunity does not.
When children are given the support they need, they can flourish beyond expectations.
Meet Nafissa
Nafissa is in ninth grade and preparing to take her BEPC examination in June, an important milestone in her academic journey. Her results speak for themselves: during the first semester , Nafissa earned an average of 16.78, the highest in her class. Every teacher described her performance as “très bien”. She achieved top marks in every subject.
Yet Nafissa’s path to success has not been easy.
She comes from a rural village outside Niamey where children attended classes in overcrowded straw tents. One day, those tents burned down. In the aftermath, the village decided to discontinue schooling altogether.
For Nafissa, this was devastating.
She loved school deeply and could not accept losing the chance to learn. She cried day and night, begging an aunt who had come to visit to take her back to Niamey so she could continue her studies.
Moved by her niece’s determination, the aunt agreed to adopt Nafissa and provide her with shelter in the city.
Soon afterward, Nafissa applied for a scholarship through our association and was accepted.
Since arriving at Hampaté Bâ Middle School, she has consistently ranked among the best students in her class.
Today, she beams with happiness and pride. Her story is a powerful reminder that when determination meets opportunity, extraordinary things can happen.
Meet Aminatou
Aminatou is another inspiring example of how timely support can protect a child’s future.
When she was ready to enter sixth grade with excellent grades in primary school, her education was suddenly placed in jeopardy.
Her father, a journalist, had lost his job and simply could not afford the tuition fees required to send his daughter to middle school.
Without intervention, her education might have ended too soon.
Fortunately, thanks to the recommendation of an alumni whose own life had once been changed by our Association's support, we learned about the family’s situation and the difficult reality that Aminatou faced.
After meeting the family and their daughter, we decided to award Aminatou a scholarship. That decision changed everything.
Thanks to the scholarship, she received the opportunity to continue her schooling. was able to attend Hampaté Bâ School, and benefit from our after-school remedial support classes.
Her enthusiasm and devotion, combined with our financial assistance and academic support, helped her reach an outstanding level of achievement. The results have been exceptional.
Aminatou is currently in seventh grade in her second year at Hampaté Bâ Middle School and ranks first in her class with an astounding average of 17,5.
Her story perfectly illustrates the life-changing impact of early intervention and educational support.
Her presence in the classroom today reflects the long-term impact of educational solidarity: one student helped yesterday becomes the advocate for another student today.
This cycle of generosity and empowerment is one of the most beautiful outcomes of our mission.
Why After-School Tutoring Matters
The success of Nafissa, Aminatou and many others proves that tutoring is about much more than homework help. It is about restoring confidence, opening doors, and ensuring that poverty does not determine destiny.
When combined with scholarships, mentoring, and compassionate guidance, tutoring becomes a transformative force.
Looking Ahead
Every child deserves the chance to learn, dream, and build a future through education. Yet many talented students remain at risk simply because they lack resources.
Our experience over the past sixteen years has shown that with patience, encouragement, and structured support, children who once struggled can become top students. Those who doubted themselves can become leaders. Those facing hardship can become symbols of hope.
The “Read and Write” program continues to demonstrate that no child should be defined by their circumstances.
Our association can only intervene and carry out its programs thanks to the generosity of the donations we humbly seek. Every contribution helps us provide scholarships, tutoring, and life-changing educational opportunities to children who need them most. Thank you for your support
