As exam season arrives in Niamey, each test for scholarship students at Hampaté Bâ Secondary School feels like a celebration of months of hard work, of overcoming hunger and hardship, and of the joyful transformation that education has brought them.
The Roots
Since 2009, for over 16 years, Les Amis de Hampaté Bâ has been on a mission to keep vulnerable students, especially girls, in school and turn them into community leaders. The founders knew that literacy is the key to opportunity – educated girls grow up to lift up whole families. In Niger, girls who go to school are far less likely to be married young and far more likely to lead healthy, productive lives.
That’s why our French nonprofit supports the Hampaté Bâ school in Niamey: by funding scholarships for underprivileged secondary school students — many of whom struggle with reading and writing. These fundamental skills are the roots of all learning, and when they are strengthened, everything else begins to grow. By promoting literacy and schooling, we are planting seeds that will blossom across the community for generations.
The Challenge
Many students face overwhelming obstacles: poverty, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of basic resources. To combat student drop-out, we’ve made targeted investments in after-school tutoring and innovative teacher training, therefore raising the bar in education quality. Our aim is to meet this challenge so that every underprivileged student can “learn, grow, and reach their full potential”.
The Solution
And it’s working!
Our scholarship students are motivated, excited, and showing up for after-school tutoring sessions on their own accord—even on public holidays like May 1st! We provide them with meals, textbooks, calculators, computer training, and even cooler classrooms to beat the heat. Their tutors are trained with cutting-edge methods that lift struggling students and make learning enjoyable. Tutoring has transformed learning from a remedial chore into a joyful, confidence-building experience. These young learners are thriving—and they know it.
It’s That Time of the Year!
As exam season approaches, our scholarship students aren’t nervous—they’re excited. They’re eager to show how far they’ve come and to make their tutors proud. Many are even celebrating the upcoming exams with music and dance! Imagine that—students in Niger celebrating exams!
This is what happens when education is empowering and full of hope.
Long-Term Impact
The transformation is real. Once-struggling students are now confident, above-average achievers. Families and communities are beginning to understand the deep connections between education and improved health, hygiene, job prospects, and environmental awareness.
And the change doesn’t stop at school:
But we can’t do it alone.
