Girl Students Make their Voices Heard at School Fair

Hampaté Bâ Secondary School holds a very joyous and much awaited event every Spring, the School “Kermesse “!

It is the annual School Fair which is entirely organised and run by the students themselves and this year our Association had some very pleasant surprises originating from the remarkable action taken by several of the underprivileged scholarship students we currently support, thanks to your continued generosity.

First, Some History & Our Mission

Our non-profit organisation, “Les Amis de Hampaté Bâ”, has been working in Niamey, Niger since 2009, Our aim was to promote children’s rights and gender quality, both being enormous challenges.

Women’s Rights… chilling statistics.

At that time, entrance to secondary schools, although accessible, was not common for young girls and the percentage of early marriages (78% under age 18) was and still is very high.

Niger's overall literacy rate is one of the lowest in the world, with a national average of 19.1% with women's literacy at 11%.Less than a quarter of women, of all ages, were enrolled in the education system in 2009.

Gender Equality Approach

To remedy this dire situation, the best we could do at our level, we started our project by awarding scholarships to deserving, vulnerable young students, especially girls, whose parents could not afford to pay for them to go to secondary school. We started raising funds to award underserved girls with scholarships to attend Hampaté Bâ Secondary School, an institution providing a quality education and advocating all the values that we believe in. This school is co-educational, but we felt that it could be inspiring for boys to see that girls also have the right to study and to succeed.

Yes, you CAN !

Fourteen years ago, when we proposed to finance tuition and scholarships for those girls who succeeded the entry test to Hampaté Bâ, neither the parents nor the girls understood what good it would do to give girls an education. The girls didn’t have confidence in themselves concerning their capacity to learn, and didn’t realize how a girl could do anything other than housework. Girls were considered inferior to boys. Therefore, it was considered inconceivable  that a girl could succeed in her studies. We, of course, repeated over and over that through education, girls are capable of gaining key skills to succeed in life.  However, to be noted, this challenge was tougher than we thought, because upon entrance to Hampaté Bâ School, most of them were very weak in reading, writing, and speaking French, hence the incentive to start our project with remediation classes put in place simultaneously for these particular students.

Fast Forward to TODAY

Today, we hear our words coming back to us through the speech of Mohammed Bazoum, President of the Republic of Niger, who is a strong advocate of Women’s rights. To quote him:

“Today we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the Niger women's march of May 13, 1991. This date marks a great moment in the fight for women's rights. This fight is ours, and belongs to all of us. We will win it above all by promoting the education and training of girls to ensure gender balance and promote participation and inclusion of women and girls. “

SURPRISE , SURPRISE !!

Things have changed in 14 years.  Gradually more and more girls are integrating secondary schools and gaining confidence in themselves. As evidence of this change,  we are proud and touched to convey the following story about girl students who are the living proof of the value of gender equality and women’s rights.

During the recent School Fair, the activities began with some student speeches, which were voluntary and on subjects free to be chosen by the students. To our great surprise the first students to give speeches were two of our scholarship girls in Middle School. They courageously gave their speeches and did not seem to be daunted by addressing themselves to an audience of 100 people without using any notes. They both communicated with confidence and captivated their audience. Their gestures and tone of speech were emphatic and made with ease. Their subject matters were conveyed with passion, were very persuasive and grabbed the audience’s attention AND they received standing ovations.

They definitely made an impact.

What were the subject matters ?  “The power of education and influential teachers” and “The value of education for girls”. Motivational subjects!

In her own words, that she recited with the rhythm of a poem,  Aminatou commented on the value of teachers :

“ I believe that teachers should get the credit they deserve. They are so important for our future and they dedicate so much time and energy towards each one of us in order to transmit their knowledge to us and to make us enjoy learning. It is thanks to them, that one day we will all have the skills needed to become a computer specialist, an engineer, a nurse, a lawyer, a deputy, a minister, or a president.  All of us are who we are thanks to what we have learned from our teachers. They are so worthy and have so much value in shaping our future. We should all appreciate the excellent teachers who are able to motivate us and who have the patience and talent to inspire us in our studies. Our success is due to their constant work and efforts for us.

We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for helping us succeed “.

As for Saratou, her personality shines through in her speech on education for girls :

“Every child should have the right to go to school, whether they be a boy or a girl. Girls should no longer be considered inferior because of tradition. Girls must make their voices heard !  Once they have an education, they can be useful to society and to their community by exercising the same trades as boys. Education is extremely important for young girls. It is the basis for girls learning to do the same jobs as boys and being able to contribute to the progress of our country, Niger.”

A worthwhile investment !

Our association has learned a lot from our work in Niger over the years and we have luckily had the vision and ability to make an ambitious investment in girls’ education in Niamey, including being able to provide good food to nourish their bodies and minds,  training them on technological know-how, and providing excellent tutors to bring our vulnerable students up to level .. an investment which is turning out to be an imperative to create a world in which girls and young women of all economic backgrounds can have equal opportunities, take charge of their own lives, make their voices heard, be the agents of change and lead the way to a more gender-equal world.

Conclusion :

By supporting young underprivileged girls at Hampaté Bâ Secondary School and giving them solid skills like reading and writing,  along with priceless opportunities contributing to their well-being, we are not only protecting them from violence and early marriages, but we are giving them a chance to gain key skills to succeed in life and move on to higher education and vocational training

We believe in offering young students tools to lead on innovative solutions. Our aim is to give the next generation the best possible chance of reaching that goal. Your continued donations to support their education is helping to make that possible.  Thank you.
