Provide lifesaving healthcare for Burmese refugees

Watsi continues to support surgical care for Burmese patients, mostly refugees living near the Burma-Thailand border, throughout the year. Access to healthcare remains an enormous challenge for Burmese who are impacted by conflict in the region. Our medical partner on the ground helps ensure that care is available for those who need it immediately. Nay* and Zaw* recently received urgent care with support from donors all over the world.

Nay comes from Karen State in Burma. Her family has been living in a refugee camp in Thailand due to armed conflict in their village. Dah needed to undergo a C-Section due to a high-risk pregnancy. Nay said, “Here in the camp, I cook, clean the house, and take care of my baby. There are not many things to do in the camp, and I miss my village and my paddy farm.” She is hopeful they can return to their home and work on her farm again when it is safe to go back.

Zaw, from Burma, was diagnosed with a heart condition that requires valve replacement. Our medical partner was able to arrange for his surgery in Thailand to ensure he receives specialized care. Zaw’s mother shared, “I leave my son’s life in your hands. I believe that he would have died in Burma if we had not come here to receive surgery with the help of your organization. When I came here, I felt like half of my burden had been lifted when I saw that your staff were kind and caring. I would like to thank you very much ahead of time for being willing to help us.”
