Supporting HIV+ Children Through Holistic Care

Your contributions are helping vulnerable children receive not only medical care, but also emotional support, protection, guidance, and hope for a brighter future.

Through your support, our project continues to provide psychosocial care, counselling, health monitoring, educational encouragement, life-skills support, and safeguarding interventions for children and adolescents affected by HIV/AIDS.

Case Highlight: Supporting Sundaraman’s Journey Toward Healing and Stability

Sundaraman (name changed for confidentiality) is a vulnerable adolescent who has experienced multiple losses and disruptions throughout his childhood. He lost his mother while studying in the 3rd standard and his father in the 6th standard. Following the death of his parents, he was cared for by his paternal grandmother until her passing, after which he was placed in institutional care.

Despite these difficult circumstances, Sundaraman continues to show resilience and hope for his future.

During counselling sessions supported through this project, Sundaraman gradually began engaging with the counsellor and shared his interests in football, volleyball, drawing, and mathematics. He expressed a strong aspiration to pursue technical education and hopes to secure stable employment in the future.

The counselling process also identified several important concerns requiring immediate support and intervention. Sundaraman is living with HIV and is aware of his health condition. Encouragingly, he has been consistent with his medication adherence. However, the assessment also revealed emotional vulnerabilities, exposure to inappropriate sexual content, and behavioural concerns linked to inadequate supervision, unresolved trauma, and lack of stable emotional support.

These findings highlighted the urgent need for:

• Continuous psychosocial counselling

• Safeguarding and behaviour intervention support

• Sexual and reproductive health education

• Emotional mentoring and positive peer engagement

• Nutritional and health monitoring

• Family reintegration planning

A positive development emerged during the assessment process. Sundaraman’s younger brother is currently being cared for by extended family members from his paternal side. This family has been identified as a possible long-term support system for Sundaraman as well. Efforts are now underway to explore safe family-based reintegration while ensuring continuity in education and emotional care.
