Beyond Emergency Relief: Building Food Autonomy in

By Fabienne Sanon | Project manager

Food distribution is often perceived as a simple, almost mechanical process: loading bags, lining up beneficiaries, and handing out rations. The reality on the ground, particularly in remote areas like the second locality of Château, tells a very different and poignantly grave story.

In these isolated communities, emergency food assistance is not a mere convenience or supplement; it is a matter of immediate survival. When our teams arrive on site, reality confronts us without filter: we meet the distressed gaze of mothers and fathers, and above all, children who have gone several consecutive days without a single hot meal. Seeing hunger mark the face of a child is a deeply unacceptable situation that one never gets used to. The urgency demands swift action to alleviate immediate suffering.

However, at the Concorde Haïtienne de Sécurité Alimentaire et Nutritionnelle (CHSAN), we refuse to limit our work to temporary emergency relief. The human assistance distributed today will be consumed tomorrow, leaving families facing the very same deprivations the day after. Permanent dependency is neither a sustainable solution nor a response that respects human dignity. That is why every emergency distribution in this second locality of Château is designed as a starting point toward self-reliance.

As soon as vital needs are stabilized, we engage in dialogue with the community to build local, sustainable solutions:

• Community gardens: By providing suitable seeds and technical support in resilient farming techniques, we enable families to collectively cultivate vegetables with high nutritional value (such as cabbage, tomatoes, or spinach). These spaces ensure a continuous supply of fresh, diversified food.

• Community poultry farms: Structured and managed by a local committee trained for this purpose, these poultry farms provide a regular source of protein through egg production, while generating additional income for the most vulnerable households.

• Local processing units (mills and processing): By equipping the locality with tools to process local harvests—such as the real potential offered by processing breadfruit into flour—we reduce post-harvest waste and create added value directly within the village.

These human-scale initiatives yield concrete and measurable results. They restore the community's capacity to produce, process, and secure their own food.

Intervening in Château is therefore not just about delivering an emergency food kit; it is about laying the groundwork so that every resident can eventually feed their family with dignity and without relying on outside aid.
