Thailand is home to a rich culture of almost 70 million people. Many of these are desperately poor. These poor (sometimes tribal communities such as Thai Yai, Karen or Akha) are often sought out by traffickers because of the need for money. COVID's hurting these populations ability to work making the risk from traffickers increased dramatically. We at "Bread for Life" provide food specific to poor at risk communities and seek to develop relationships to help break the cycle of poverty.
The tribal communities of Thailand often work very low-end minimum wage jobs that provide just enough for food and a hut. When the economy suffers or labor is restricted, these individuals who are not eligible for government aid can become desperate very quickly. Despite the risks, many very poor fathers and mothers have allowed their children to be taken for a sum of $250 - $600 in the hopes that they will be given a good job. This is never the reality as they become slaves
Thailand relies on tourism for up to 18% of GDP. Many who come to Thailand do so because of sex tourism fueled by large numbers of estimated prostitutes and sex slaves. Traffickers find families who have adequate food and labor a hard target. Additionally, those with education about the problem know the lies of a 'good job' are 100% false. We want to break the cycle of poverty with food to help build a relationship of trust.
We know we can't change the world. We can, however, help to change the lives of these few we have a chance to serve in the Thai Yai community (lower Myanmar through northern Thailand). Our vision for the future is to serve food while building friendships and looking for opportunities to improve education. We want to provide a step but DO NOT want to create dependence.
