We have updates from the field!

The beautiful Jackals we welcomed!

Hello All!

We are well into 2016 now, but I hope that your start to the year has been as good as ours! We have been incredibly busy lately at the animal orphanage, and here are the highlights of what has been going on!

In the last few months we have had the arrival of a host of new animals. Smurfie, Sissi, and Speedy are all very young banded mongoose who arrived about two months ago. They came to DAKTARI separately but, because of their young age we have been able to bond them together and they are now living happily together!

In addition to the mongoose, we also welcomed another set of animals in threes! In early February we welcomed three jackals from Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre. The three young animals were taken to Moholoholo when they were very young, and they have been hand reared. We are hoping that at DAKTARI they will be able to fully grow and then hopefully we will be able to release them on the DAKTARI farm in the close future!

Not only have we been welcoming new animals, but we have also been doing work to improve some of the animal camps and the area in the farm around the camp! We have built a new enclosure which will soon house any new animals that may be coming to DAKTARI in the future. Moreover, over the past few days we have accommodated a camp to welcome a wild dog, as well as strongly improved the waterhole close to the camp to make it more durable and comfortable for animals to come and drink. It is not easy to build a structure that can hold the full weight of a one-tonne Giraffe!

Updates on our work with the animals!

Nyalou and Chancy!

Hello All!

Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your incredible support! Week in and week out we are reminded of all the amazing people who have helped us and are helping us achieve our goal of inspiring young people to care about the environment. For that, we are incredibly grateful!

Over the last few months we have had the additions of a fair few new animals! In addition to the baby Nyala Chancy, which we welcomed last time, we welcomed another young baby nyala which we named Nyalou. He came to us from a nearby farm at a very young age, and he even still had his umbilical cord attached. Incredibly, from the beginning he was very calm around people and he has grown up for the last month and a half incredibly well. Him and Chancy are inseparable and are getting along very well. As they both grew up without a mother, they find comfort with each other.

In addition to this, we are going through one of the worst droughts which our area has seen in years. The bush is very dry and we have reached a situation where we fear for the wellbeing of the animals that live on the DAKTARI Farm. All three provinces affected have been labelled as being disaster areas due to the severity of the situation. With the baby-season coming we want to be able to provide a little support to prevent malnutrition, dehydration, or even the death of some of these animals, as well as ensuring that the future mothers can provide for their young ones in the heat.

The drought which is currently affecting the area in which DAKTARI is has become more severe than was initially thought. Around this time, we would have experienced scattered rainfall and a progressively greener bush going into the rainy season. Follow the link to this project (Drought relief for the farm) which aims to counter the potentially devastating effects of the drought by providing a food source for the wild animals without majorly interfering.

A period of welcoming!

Hello All!

We hope that you have enjoyed your summer as much as we have our winter! There is a lot of news coming from the DAKTARI camp with regards to our animals! Over the past few weeks we have welcomed a number of animals. Either due to injury or because they were abandoned or lost their mothers, every new animal holds a special place in our heart as we welcome them here to give them a second chance at life.

We have recently welcomed two new birds to our family. On one hand we received a new Spotted Eagle Owl from Moholoholo Rehab Centre as it’s injured wing could not be successfully mended and it would never be able to fly again. As it is used to being around people from it’s stay at Moholoholo, it is very calm and absolutely beautiful. It came without a name and we could not agree on a name at the camp so you can leave a comment below with suggestions or head over to our Facebook Page to submit a name!

In addition to the Eagle Owl we also welcomed Nitro, a White Faced Spok’s Owl. She was hit by a car and rescued by a farmer nearby. Unfortunately, the collision severely damaged her eye and she has lost her vision in it. She was brought to DAKTARI as this injury means that she is no longer able to hunt, and hence fence for herself. Although small, Nitro has quite the character!

In addition to these two owls, we also welcomed a cheetah, Martin, and a baby Nyala which we called Chancy. These two additions have been incredible for both the volunteers and the children as they have been able to see two different examples of the beauty of the nature around them. Moreover, the baby Nyala has been fed every three hours, giving many volunteers and children the opportunity of interacting with an animal that is very difficult to see or approach in the wild. Your donations make it possible for us to take care of these animals and provide them with special care towards the injuries which they have come with. In addition to this, through your donations we have been able to accommodate the enclosures we have to their new tenants! Moreover, we are able to provide Chancy the Nyala with a correct diet as well as nutritious supplements so that he grows healthy. So far all these additions have accommodated very well and they are all progressing incredibly well. More news coming soon!

Again, a heartfelt thank you for supporting DAKTARI! You motivate us to keep going and overcome times of difficulty! Moreover, you make a difference by allowing us to take that step further and welcome new animals and take care of them!
