New year, New Outlook for Nepal
![]()
All GFV children have their own "grandparents". Here Suman and his Grandfather Hitman work on
a coloring project together. See project description below.
THE OLD AND THE NEW
Since 2015, post earthquake, there has hardly been any visible improvement in the lives of the majority of the victims and their children. The destruction created by the quakes has not yet been properly managed. Due to the delay in rehabilitation thousands of families are still living in makeshift tents deprived of basic facilities like clean water, sanitation, proper health services;
fighting to survive in winter. Fortunately, just last November the general elections of the local government bodies, state legislatures and federal government were successfully held, for the first time in the history of Nepal! This is wonderful news for local people, and should help GFV to help empower the communities to help themselves!!
The GFV-N model of childcare, is a unique innovative program of helping children in need that we have been implementing in Nepal. The aftermath of the quake delayed the progress, however, the children that we have been supporting are healthy and are progressing well academically. The local project implementing partner, Cooperative Society of Bungamati has been taking full responsibility of the children living in the Family House! The construction of a new building for children living the Family House was a big achievement! The Home-Stay program that was abandoned after the earthquake could not be continued again as most of the farmer women involved in the home-stay program are still in living make-shift tents. GFV would like to help these villagers rebuild their homes and their lives. This is critical for the success of the program and the sustainability of the project. We will let you know how you can participate in the coming months.
After the great success of the coloring book for very young children about the earthquake, GFV and GFV-N, with financial support from GlobalGiving have produced a comic book for school-aged children to help them prepare in the event of another earthquake. It is anticipated that the children will help pass on the information to their parents, extended family members and neighbors. (See little excerpt below.)
GFV continues to provide training and technical support to the schoolteachers from multiple villages as GFV-N prepares to expands its community-based model of childcare in 2018. Prof. Loren Weybright is currently in Bungamati where he and his colleagues are hosting a group of ECD student teachers from the US.
About the photo....The grandparents check-in with the children living in the Family House from time-to-time. On December 19, 2017 a Grandparents Workshop was organized in Bungamati. The children talked with their grandparents and helped them prepare their individual family histories. Then each child and granparent parent in-group prepared a drawing of the family. An interesting part of the drawings was that in all drawings the BFH children were found included as a member of the respective family!
Once again, we thank our GlobalGiving friends and supporters. We ask that you continue your support as we help rebuild lives, young and old....
Namaste!
