Project Report | Jul 23, 2018
Summer Academy

By Zuzana Rodakova | junior manager

All the children participating in the Wild poppies scholarship program come from a socially and economically disadvantaged background. Without external support they wouldn’t have the chance to nourish their talent. Through our activities we provide them with a chance for education, motivate them to achieve better results, support their ambitions and perseverance. All our activities are designed to further the integration of our participants into society.

Apart from financial and material support designated to cover all the academic and extracurricular expenses, we provide emotional and motivational support to help combat problematic situations. Every “poppy” is paired with an individual mentor who oversees his or hers school attendance, academic performance and contributes to the formation of a balanced, respectable young adult. Mentors are also in touch with the families and teachers of their mentees.

Divé maky also organizes regular workshops, creative a personal development activities and summer camps. During these the participants interact with a diverse group of professionals and artists and together work on their talent. Thanks to these activities our participants gain knew knowledge and experiences and gradually get to know the world outside of their community.

Wild Poppies organize and prepare 8 days summer camp, called Summer Academy Camp for 30 young talented Roma children, coming from social disadvantaged communities and areas all over Slovakia. The purpose of a summer academy is to provide an area for personal development of Roma children and youth with aim to increase their motivation and trough building their self-confidence. This summer camp present a great possibility of developing children´s talent in school and art trough activities during the summer holidays and also to develop their sense and pride for own culture and origins and help to foster cultural integration. This is often their only chance to experience an inspirational summer camp out of their own comunity. Summer academy and workshops which take part in it are a chance to show young Roma people a world beyond their community, to build mutual relationships and strenghten their abilities, motivation and responsability.

Thanks to you, our great sponsors and supporters we can organise a lot of events for these children and youth every year. There they can work on improving their talents, skills and personalities. We can also organise small trips, train our mentors (who are the second parents of our children) and also deal with unexpected expenses and hard life situations of our children, that unfortunately sometimes occurs.

Thanks to your support and your donations via GlobalGiving we change lives of talented Roma children who need it the most. We would be very pleased if you became our donor and support our activities. With your help we can create new generation of Roma- educated, hardworking, confident and proud.

We thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts for your support :-)

Yours  Divé maky
