Provide disability care and education in Uganda

Our work providing wheelchairs and education for children from St. Jude Children's Home in northern Uganda is going well thanks to your help!

Since our last project report, we have raised another $632 from this Global Giving campaign, which is an enormously significant amount in terms of our abilities to help in Gulu, Uganda.  In particular, new donations are being used to help offset the costs of raising children at St. Jude's on a daily basis.  This includes food, education, health care, and personal support from caring staff members.  Recurring monthly donations have been a particularly valuable way for us to be able to guarantee support of individual children for St. Jude's.

Wheelchairs are currently being purchased for children with special needs from a facility in Gulu.  Although we had every assurance from Whirlwind Wheelchairs that we could buy wheelchairs from them and ship them to Gulu, they never finalized the project, so we are now working with a local distributor in Gulu.  Great for the local economy anyway!  And any replacement parts will be easy to obtain.

You made the September Open Challenge a wonderful success for Social Promise and our partner nonprofit in Uganda, St. Jude Children’s Home. To date, we have received $5,236 in donations from 70 donors. We met our goal of becoming a part of the Global Giving community, and in doing so, we earned $4,000 in matching dollars directly from our own anonymous donor. THANK YOU!

Because of your incredible generosity, Social Promise will be providing wheelchairs to seven people with severely limiting mobility disabilities. We obtained donations for four of these wheelchairs directly through this Global Giving campaign and another three during an event we hosted in New York in October. We are actively working with St. Mary’s Hospital-Lacor, Whirlwind Wheelchairs, and Consolation Home at St. Jude Children’s Home to get the wheelchairs delivered. Thank you for making this happen! Please take a look at a couple of the chair recipients and learn their stories below.

We have also guaranteed St. Jude Children’s Home funding for five orphans for an entire year and one child with special needs for half a year, with donations from the September Challenge. We are providing 12 girls with supplies for secondary school and with additional un-specified donations through this drive, we are able to give St. Jude Children’s Home the ability to support other orphans in their personal, health, and educational needs. The September Open Challenge was a wonderful experience for all of us at Social Promise as we learned what we need to do to keep our supporters informed and empowered to help with the excellent programs in place at St. Jude Children’s Home.
