Back to School!
January 2021 was the month in which all children have returned to school after almost a year. As we reported in November, Phyllis and her staff have been working hard to keep the children busy and active during the lockdown, so it is a relief for them to go back to school, even though its difficult at time to keep the children safe.
A new washing machine. We wanted to let you know that thanks to your donations, Lewa has been able to purchase that much-needed new washing machine, that we mentioned was needed last July. This arrived before Christmas. To most of us a new washing machine is not very important, but it will make a huge difference to Lewa, as they used to spend a considerable time each day washing the children’s clothes.
Improving the children’s playground. As the children were at home for so much of last year they spent lots of time on the playground equipment to work off their energy. The staff then realised that the playground, which was constructed in 2005, and has been repaired many times, needed a total overhaul, with new equipment to make it safe, more child-friendly, with more modern playground stations, as they are still using those which are 15 years old.
Please help us to get new equipment for the children to play on.
How Daniel has changed!
We want to finish by telling you about Daniel, who came to us as a young boy. He had been abandoned by his parents, as he was born with a hole in his heart, and had also developed pneumonia. Luckily, he was taken to Lewa Children’s Home, and after several hospital visits, his heart recovered, and his other symptoms - the result of being so malnourished - subsided.
When Daniel first arrived, he would only whisper a few words in Swahili, he wouldn’t play with the other children and he wanted to be held all the time, to feel he was loved. After a year at Lewa, he started to talk and play with the other children. We are very pleased to report that four years later, he is a pupil at KipKeino Primary School, and has blossomed both physically and emotionally.
Little By Little Campaign: your donation goes the extra mile
GlobalGiving is running the Little By Little campaign. Every donation up to £50 between March 8th till the 12th, will be matched 50% by GlobalGiving. For example, if you give £20, that's £30 that will go to the project - at no extra cost to you - to help more children like Martin get the education they need to look forward to a brighter future.
I know you probably have a lot on your mind right now, but I hope you'll consider making a small gift. Phyllis Keino and her dedicated staff and volunteers rely on the generosity of friends like you to continue caring for children who had absolutely nothing and no one, until they found a loving home at Lewa.
