Lewa children’s home welcomes four new-borns babies, two so small their umbilical cords were still attached

Every year Lewa Children’s Home in Nairobi, Kenya welcomes new children to care for. This autumn we welcomed four new-born babies: Maria, Rita, Paul and Jabes, two of whom were so young, they still had their umbilical cords attached.

Maria

Last September baby Maria was found abandoned near Kandie Primary School on the Huruma Estate, in north-east Nairobi. She was taken to Huruma Health Facility, where they discovered that her umbilical cord was still clamped and had to be cut. After the case was reported to the police, Lewa agreed to take her for a three-year period. She’s now been at Lewa for six months and is thriving.

Rita

Last autumn baby Rita was found abandoned at the Road Block area on the outskirts of Eldoret town, and taken to the same health facility as Maria, where she was also found to have her umbilical cord still attached. As it was in the middle of the night, and there was not enough space at the Health Centre, Phyllis, who runs Lewa Children’s home, went to collect her herself, so she and her staff could look after her. Rita is now in good health and feels loved, thanks to Phyllis and her staff.

Paul

Late last summer baby Paul was admitted to Lewa aged one month old, after his 21-year-old mother disappeared from the hospital two days after giving birth and efforts to trace her proved futile. As he had to leave hospital, the local Children’s Officer suggested that he was moved to a children’s home. He was committed to Lewa for a three-year period and is happy and flourishing.

Jabes

Baby Jabes was found abandoned at a supermarket one evening last November, after her mother asked a student outside the supermarket to hold her and never returned. Jabes was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for care, where she stayed overnight. The following day she was welcomed to Lewa, and goes back to the hospital for regular check-ups.

Sadly, these are common occurrences, but with your support, Phyllis and her team are able to offer them, and hundreds of other children like them, a loving home to them all.

Last year, Phyllis, who started and runs Lewa Children’s Home won the World of Children Humanitarian Award in recognition of her work of dramatically improving the lives of orphaned and abandoned children in Kenya.
