Fatou Keita Books See Heavy Use in FAVL Libraries

Reading Fatou Keita in Ouargaye
Reading Fatou Keita in Ouargaye

As we mentioned in our last project report, FAVL staff used your generous contributions to purchase 80 Fatou Keita books in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in late July, in time for FAVL's summer reading camps and for our other youth patrons to have access to the series over summer vacation. (Please see the October 2014 report for library allocation spreadsheet and purchase receipt.) FAVL's Activities Coordinator, Alidou Boué, brought back 6 books apiece for each of the 7 libraries in Tuy province, as well as FAVL's libraries in northern Burkina Faso (Ouargaye, Béléhédé, Pobé-Mengao, Bougounam and Kiembara).

In keeping with our project goal of providing access to African-authored books to our library patrons, Dounko Sanou, FAVL's Burkina Faso representative, last week distributed another $150 worth of African authored children's books, with a heavy emphasis on the Fatou Keita series, to the libraries in the southwest of Burkina Faso.  (See FAVL blog link below.)

As our ongoing donors know well, Fatou Keita is the Ivoirian author of a wildly popular series of children's picture books. Her titles include Le Retour de la Voleuse des SouriresLe Coq Qui Ne Voulait Plus ChanterSinabani, La Petite Dernière, and Le Boubou du Père Noël. The stories are set in familiar rural African village settings and reflect the readers' daily life experiences.  Each page features a large, colorful illustration with a few lines of text, perfect for the young or emergent reader. Even younger pre-literate children enjoy turning the pages of Fatou Keita's books and marveling at the lively illustrations.

The over 100 new books purchased with the monies raised by this project are being much enjoyed by children visiting FAVL's libraries, and librarians often feature the volumes during storytime!
