With no parents to look after them, Chenda* and her sister grew up mostly living on the streets, with shelter provided by their brother in law from time to time. Life without parents was hard, and they often went without food. When she was only 14 years old, Chenda’s younger sister was raped at gun point in front of her eyes. Chenda managed to run to get help and the perpetrator was arrested.
“I felt in shock and still do, I pity my sister for what happened to her, and I hate that I saw it with my own eyes. What happened to her is horrible” says Chenda.
Chenda and her sister were sent to Hagar, and after receiving trauma informed care and other recovery services, Chenda is now receiving Economic Empowerment services. She has been taught about goal setting and has received good advice from Hagar staff. She now has a job and is happy to able to save up enough money to support her baby. She says “My parents in law will like me when I can bring back some money for the family. “
“My general knowledge has improved a lot and I have specific skills now in hair and nail grooming. In the future, I plan to run my own salon business when I have had time to save up.” says Chenda.
