Summary

AGIR POUR L'ENVIRONNEMENT (APE) is seeking USD 100,000 to protect communities affected by gully erosion and flooding in Burundi. Our project aims to stabilize and rehabilitate the banks of gullies that continue to widen due to heavy rains, uncontrolled runoff, and environmental degradation. These gullies threaten the homes of Congolese refugees in the Kavumu camp in Burundi, the farmland of Congolese refugees and host communities, public infrastructure (schools and health centers).

Challenge

Kavumu Refugee Camp in Burundi faces growing threats from flooding and ravine erosion. Expanding ravines damage shelters, roads, sanitation facilities, and access to essential services, affecting thousands of refugees and vulnerable host community members. Women, children, and older people are especially at risk. This project will stabilize ravines through erosion-control structures, vegetation planting, and community engagement, improving safety, environmental resilience, and living conditions

Solution

This project will protect and rehabilitate ravines in Kavumu Refugee Camp through erosion-control structures, improved drainage systems, and the planting of bamboo and other soil-stabilizing vegetation. Community members will receive training on environmental protection and maintenance of the restored areas. These actions will reduce flooding, prevent further land degradation, protect shelters and infrastructure, and improve safety and resilience for more than 5,000 refugees and vulnerable host

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, the project will reduce flood risks, stop the expansion of ravines, protect infrastructure and livelihoods, and strengthen climate resilience in Kavumu Refugee Camp. Restored ecosystems and trained community members will ensure sustainable environmental protection for more than 5,000 refugees and host community members.
