For an American mother and her children being abused in New Zealand, escaping domestic violence and child abuse meant making an impossible choice: leave quickly and risk abandoning a beloved dog to further abuse, or remain trapped in a dangerous situation. Aspen, a faithful and gentle companion who had been a source of comfort for the children during some of their darkest moments, had also become a victim of the violence within the home.
Determined that no member of the family would be left behind, the mother reached out for help. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of Pathways supporters, a plan was put in place to bring the family—and Aspen—to safety. What might seem like "just a pet" to some was, to these children, a cherished friend who had provided unconditional love and comfort when fear and uncertainty filled their days.
The journey to freedom required overcoming numerous logistical challenges, but together they were able to leave behind an environment marked by abuse and begin again in safety. By ensuring Aspen could accompany the family, Pathways removed one of the greatest barriers survivors often face when trying to escape. Instead of enduring the heartbreak of leaving a beloved companion behind, the children were able to bring with them a piece of stability and love that had carried them through unimaginable circumstances.
Today, the family is rebuilding their lives in peace back in the USA. The children are healing, their mother is creating a secure future, and Aspen is where he has always belonged—curled up beside the people who love him. In the quiet moments of ordinary life, whether on family walks or simply resting together at home, there is a renewed sense of safety that once felt out of reach.
Your support made this possible. Because of generous donors, an entire family—including one loyal four-legged member—was given the opportunity to leave violence behind and begin a new chapter filled with hope. Stories like Aspen's remind us that abuse affects every member of the household, and that healing is strongest when families are able to remain together.
Thank you for making it possible for survivors, both human and animal, to find safety, healing, and a place to call home once again.
Warmly, The Pathway's Team
