During times of crisis, Terre des Hommes Netherlands worked quickly to provide life-saving assistance to children and their families.  We provided comprehensive child protection services, SGBV prevention and response services as well as psychosocial support to the victims of conflict in the North Shewa Zone of Amhara region.

Key Achievements

In the North Shewa Zone, TdH NL made a huge impact, providing crucial services to vulnerable children and women. Notable achievements include:

  • Comprehensive child protection case management for 285 vulnerable children.
  • Individual Protection Assistance (IPA) delivered to 1,947 children and women.
  • Support for 100 vulnerable children under informal care arrangements with essential non-food items.
  • Dignity kits provided to 300 adolescent girls attending school and cash for dignity kits for 700 women of reproductive age.
  • Parental skill training provided to 125 parents and caregivers.
  • Multi-purpose cash assistance provided to 850 households

Moreover, group-based activities promoting protection, well-being, and learning were conducted for 304 children and 70 women and girls. Training sessions were also organised for staff, government officials, and partners, enhancing their capabilities in child protection, GBV, and psychosocial support.

In North Wollo Zone, we provided comprehensive child protection case management services to 150 vulnerable children with protection concerns,  provided Individual Protection Assistance(IPA) to 1,000 children, supported 400 Unaccompanied and Separated children under informal care arrangements with need-based assorted non-food items (blanket, bed sheet, cooking pot and mattress) and provided dignity kit in-kind support to 2,125 women in reproductive age, each received 1,080 ETB to buy a sanitary pad and other materials. We also provided positive parental skills and psychosocial support training for 292 parents and other caregivers. Multi-purpose cash assistance was provided to 1,161 households. Emergency cash assistance was provided to 1176 households using crisis modifier.

Key challenges

The ongoing conflict between the Non State Armed Group (NSAG) named “Fano militia” and Ethiopian Defence Force (EDF) posed significant challenges, resulting in the displacement of people and the suspension of program implementation. However, with a comprehensive security assessment and adaptive measures, our team successfully addressed the changing context, ensuring the safety of our staff and allowing program operations to continue.
