Summary

This project supports frontline protection work in one of Africa's most critical landscapes. Mount Kenya biosphere reserve sustains the lives of over 3.5 million people and critical biodiverse species. At its centre is the second-highest mountain in Africa, surrounded by forest spanning over 250,000 Hectares. Decades of mounting pressures have set the landscape on a trajectory in which, by 2040, 40-55% of its vegetation cover could be lost, and by 2030, Mount Kenya would lose all its glaciers.

Challenge

Mount Kenya Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site supports 3.5 million people and thousands of endemic and endangered wildlife species. Decades of pressure and climate change are pushing this living landscape to the brink. By 2030, its glaciers could be gone. By 2040, 40-55% of vegetation cover could be lost. Communities caught in cycles of survival are driving further destruction. The relationship between people and nature is breaking, and both are paying the price.

Solution

This project will directly support Mount Kenya ranger teams by equipping, sustaining and strengthening the frontline force protecting these critical ecosystems. Rangers will be resourced for daily patrols, wildlife monitoring, wildfire response and community engagement across over 260,000 hectares. Better-equipped rangers mean faster threat response, stronger forest protection and deeper community partnerships that keep both people and nature thriving through coexistence.

Long-Term Impact

A sustained ranger force means Mount Kenya's forests recover, wildlife populations grow, and ecosystem degradation is actively reversed. People and wildlife learn to coexist harmoniously across a resilient, thriving landscape. The result is a healthy Mount Kenya ecosystem, one that continues to sustain 3.5 million people, protect irreplaceable biodiversity, and stand as proof that people and nature can thrive together.
