Project Report | May 5, 2026
Greater Zululand Reserve Progress

By Julia Elliott | Fundraising and Reporting Manager

The Protected Area Expansion Project continues to support the long-term growth and ecological management of conservation land in Zululand. Work has remained focused on improving the condition of the added properties, while also continuing to identify and secure further land that can contribute to conservation expansion in the region.

During this reporting period, the team continued with bush clearing and the management of alien invasive plant species within the added properties. These activities are important for restoring habitat quality, improving access for management and monitoring, and supporting the long-term ecological value of the land. Ongoing alien plant control also helps reduce pressure on indigenous vegetation and supports the rehabilitation of areas that are being incorporated into the broader conservation landscape.

Preparatory work also remains ongoing for the potential introduction of black rhino as part of the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. This includes ensuring that the relevant properties are suitably managed, secured, and ecologically prepared to support the possible future introduction of this critically important species. The project therefore continues to contribute not only to land expansion, but also to broader species conservation objectives within Zululand.

In addition to the work being undertaken on the current properties, the project remains focused on expanding further afield in Zululand. The team continues to work on identifying and securing new land that can be brought under conservation management in the future. This remains a long-term process, requiring landowner engagement, ecological assessment, management planning, and the development of practical conservation partnerships.

The Protected Area Expansion Project remains an important part of building a larger, better-connected conservation landscape. Through continued habitat management, alien plant control, preparation for future species reintroductions, and ongoing efforts to secure additional land, the project is helping to strengthen conservation outcomes across Zululand.
