Greater Zululand Reserve Progress

By Julia Elliott | Fundraising and Reporting Manager

The land expansion project continued to progress during the reporting period, with a strong focus on land rehabilitation, infrastructure maintenance, and strategic conservation planning. Bush clearing and the removal of alien invasive plant species remain ongoing on the Diedericks property. These activities are aimed at restoring natural vegetation structure, improving habitat quality, and preparing the land for long-term incorporation into the broader conservation landscape.

Internal access roads across the expanded properties are being actively maintained to ensure year-round accessibility for management, security, and ecological operations. Regular grading and upkeep are undertaken to limit erosion, manage surface runoff, and maintain safe and functional access routes. In parallel, borehole infrastructure on the properties continues to be maintained, with these systems operating on solar power. The use of solar-powered boreholes supports sustainable water provision while reducing operational costs and reliance on external energy sources.

In addition to on-the-ground rehabilitation and infrastructure management, the Zululand Conservation Trust conservation team is actively engaged in advancing strategic agreements with several neighbouring reserves. These engagements are focused on developing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that may, in future, allow for the controlled dropping of wildlife fences as part of a broader rewilding and ecological expansion strategy. This approach is intended to support species dispersal and genetic flow, thereby contributing to the long-term objective of expanding the Greater Zululand Reserve.

Collectively, these efforts reflect a coordinated approach to land expansion that integrates habitat rehabilitation, sustainable infrastructure management, and regional collaboration, strengthening the ecological and operational foundation for future conservation growth.
