Strengthening communication infrastructure in BTR

By Monica Verma | Project Leader

Hi Friend,

Hope you are doing great!

At the outset, we would like to express our gratitude to you for supporting the project ‘Equip Forest Guards to Protect Wildlife in India’. The project aims to develop a strong, well-equipped and motivated force of Frontline Forest Staff, who are guarding India’s Protected Areas. Your generous contribution will significantly help us realize the project’s aim. We are also highly thankful to you for believing in us, our work and for choosing to donate for this cause.

The updates from the project are as follows.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve is one of the nine tiger reserves initially established in 1973 under Project Tiger. It is a critical part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the Mysore Elephant Reserve. It is endowed with rich biodiversity and is known for its large ungulate species such as muntjac, chital, sambhar, chousingha, gaur, wild pig and elephants as well as its predatory carnivores like tiger, leopards and dholes.

Moolehole range is situated in the core protected areas of Mudumalai and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. This is an excellent habitat for wildlife as it is away from the periphery and is often where rescued animals are rehabilitated. However due to the rough terrain of this range, there is a lack of communication facilities which hinders conservation work. Staff are not able to communicate during wildlife emergencies such as forest fires or attacks from poachers which has even led to the death of a forest guard. To address this issue, we installed wireless AIR FIBER towers in the area. This will improve communication between staff and offices and will hopefully motivate the staff towards their wildlife conservation duties.

That’s all for today. We’ll soon follow up with more updates from the project. Till then, take care!

With regards,

Team WTI
