Training 100 Youth and Women to Build Local Trees

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Communities need practical skills and local capacity to sustain environmental restoration. When young people and women gain knowledge of tree growing, they can contribute to conservation while exploring opportunities to apply these skills in their communities.

With support from the Global Greengrants Fund, Uganda Wildlife Society trained 100 individuals, primarily youth and women, in Tororo District on tree nursery establishment, tree planting, and tree management.

The training introduced practical approaches to establishing nurseries, raising seedlings, planting trees appropriately, and caring for young trees. These skills are important because successful restoration depends on both the availability of seedlings and the ability to establish and maintain them.

Participants can apply their knowledge in household tree planting, community restoration, and other appropriate environmental activities. Where resources and markets are available, nursery skills may also create opportunities to produce seedlings for local use or sale.

The training contributes to broader efforts to restore degraded landscapes and increase community participation in conservation.

We recognize that the long-term impact of training depends on whether participants can access planting materials, apply their skills, and receive opportunities for continued learning. Supporting these next steps can help translate training into lasting outcomes.

We sincerely thank the Global Greengrants Fund and the participating trainees for their contribution to this initiative.

By equipping 100 people with practical tree-growing skills, we are strengthening local capacity to support restoration and encouraging greater community involvement in environmental conservation.

Thank you for investing in people as well as the landscapes they help protect.
