Sustainable Fisheries in Uganda

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

For fishing communities, healthy aquatic ecosystems are directly connected to food security, household income, and future livelihood opportunities. Protecting these ecosystems therefore requires an approach that recognizes both environmental needs and the realities facing local fishers.

Uganda Wildlife Society has supported fishing communities in Buliisa and Mayuge Districts with standard fishing nets and a speedboat engine intended to improve fishing activities and facilitate transportation on the water.

In Buliisa, the Society also supported nine Beach Management Units: Kabolwa, Karakaba, Bugoigo, Piida A, Piida B, Walukuba, Nyamukunta, Wasenko, and Kalolo. Each unit received fishing equipment comprising 51 pieces of legal fishing nets and 20 spools.

Access to appropriate equipment can help fishers work more effectively when it complies with applicable regulations and is used responsibly. The speedboat engine is intended to make transportation easier, although safe operation, maintenance, and responsible use remain essential.

Sustainable fisheries depend on more than equipment. They also require compliance with fisheries regulations, protection of aquatic habitats, responsible harvesting, and cooperation between fishing communities and relevant authorities.

Beach Management Units can play a valuable role in communicating regulations, promoting responsible practices, and supporting community participation in fisheries management.

We are grateful to the Ecosystems Alliance Project for supporting important community-based natural resource management activities in Buliisa and to all participating fishing communities.

Our goal is to help communities sustain their livelihoods while protecting the aquatic ecosystems on which future generations will depend.

Thank you for supporting responsible fisheries and community conservation in Uganda.
