Dear Donor,
We are excited to share our continued efforts to restore degraded landscapes and promote sustainable tree growing among smallholder households in Buliisa District, within Uganda's ecologically important Albertine Rift region.
Through the project Empowering Communities for Sustainable Natural Resource Management in the Albertine Rift – Buliisa Region, Uganda Wildlife Society has worked with smallholder households to promote tree planting as a practical solution to environmental degradation and a pathway toward more diversified livelihoods.
With support from the Ecosystems Alliance Project, participating households have contributed to an important restoration milestone: more than 195,000 trees planted through the initiative.
Tree planting helps improve vegetation cover, protect vulnerable soils, support biodiversity, and strengthen the resilience of landscapes facing environmental pressures. When trees are integrated into suitable farming systems, they can also provide future opportunities for timber, poles, fuelwood, and other products, depending on the species and responsible harvesting practices.
Our work emphasizes that planting trees is only the beginning. Long-term success requires watering, protecting young seedlings, replacing losses where possible, and monitoring tree survival.
By working directly with farmers, UWS is promoting a conservation approach that combines environmental restoration with community participation and sustainable land management.
We sincerely thank the Ecosystems Alliance Project and participating households for their contribution to this important work.
Together, we are growing trees, restoring landscapes, and investing in a greener future for the Albertine Rift.
