Strengthening Livestock Farmers

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

We are pleased to share an important achievement from our work with livestock-keeping communities in Buliisa District, where farmers are gaining practical knowledge to improve livestock production while promoting more sustainable management of pasture and natural resources.

As part of the project, livestock farmers working in Buliisa were trained in forage conservation, milk handling, and pasture improvement. The training equipped farmers with practical skills that can help them maintain healthier livestock, improve the quality of milk produced, and manage pasture resources more effectively throughout the year.

Participants learned the importance of forage conservation as a way of preparing feed resources for periods when pasture availability is limited. Improved forage management can help farmers maintain more consistent livestock nutrition and reduce pressure on natural grazing areas, particularly during dry periods.

The training also focused on pasture improvement, helping farmers understand better approaches to maintaining and improving grazing areas. Healthy and productive pastures can provide livestock with better-quality feed while supporting more sustainable land management and reducing degradation caused by overgrazing.

Another important component was milk handling and hygiene. Farmers were introduced to good practices for handling, storing, and transporting milk in order to maintain quality and reduce contamination. Better milk-handling practices can contribute to improved household food safety and increase opportunities for farmers to benefit from quality milk markets.

The initiative connects environmental conservation with livelihoods by helping livestock farmers adopt practices that can improve productivity while reducing unnecessary pressure on land and natural resources.

We are grateful to the partners who supported this important capacity-building initiative and to the livestock farmers of Buliisa for their active participation and willingness to adopt improved practices.

By strengthening farmers' knowledge today, we are helping build healthier livestock, more productive farms, safer milk, and more resilient communities tomorrow.

Together, we are promoting sustainable agriculture and empowering livestock-keeping communities to manage their resources more responsibly.
