100 Youth and Women with Tree Nursery& Restoration

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

We are excited to share a meaningful achievement from our community-based environmental conservation work in Tororo District, Eastern Uganda. With generous support from the Global Greengrants Fund, Uganda Wildlife Society (UWS) successfully trained 100 individuals, primarily youth and women, in practical skills for tree nursery establishment, tree planting, and sustainable tree management.

The training was designed to equip participants with knowledge and hands-on skills that they can apply within their own communities. Participants learned how to establish and manage tree nurseries, select suitable tree species, prepare planting materials, care for seedlings, establish trees successfully, and provide appropriate management to improve their survival and long-term growth.

For many participants, particularly young people and women, the training provides an opportunity to become active environmental stewards while developing practical skills that can support household livelihoods. Participants can apply their new knowledge to establish small-scale nurseries, produce seedlings for restoration activities, and encourage other community members to adopt sustainable tree-growing practices.

The initiative also strengthens local capacity to respond to deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate-related challenges affecting communities in Tororo. Rather than relying entirely on external actors, trained community members can now share their knowledge with their families, neighbors, schools, and other community groups, helping conservation practices spread further.

The participation of youth and women is particularly important. By placing conservation knowledge and practical skills in the hands of these community members, the project is helping build a new generation of environmental champions who can contribute to restoring degraded landscapes and protecting natural resources.

We sincerely thank the Global Greengrants Fund for supporting this important capacity-building initiative. We also appreciate the 100 trainees for their commitment to learning and taking action for the environment.

This training is an investment that goes beyond the 100 individuals directly reached. Every trained participant has the potential to establish trees, raise seedlings, influence others, and inspire wider community action.

Together, we are growing skills, growing trees, empowering communities, and building a greener and more resilient future for Tororo.

Thank you for supporting community-led environmental conservation and investing in the people who can drive lasting change.
